Overview
I love listening to my music anywhere and anytime. I created my own playlist according to my mood, the time of the day and its genre so I could deal with the time specially if I’m just killing it on my way to work or waiting for something. So you won’t see me without my earphones plugged in my ear when I go out of my house. I always wanted to bring my music along with me however I don’t want to consume most of my phone’s memory with just tons of my music. So I decided to buy a second-hand Ipod Classic 6th generation with 160GB of memory!! (wow! that’s too much for my collections.)
My first and second Ipod Classic didn’t last long. The first one fell hard on the floor accidentally that the hard disk stopped from booting. We’ll that’s one of the disadvantages of the Ipod classic, the use of hard disk which are susceptible to mechanical damage. I tried to open it and repair, but it just got worse. The second one just simply get corrupted for unknown reason. It can no longer be detected by the PC and the screen is just stuck up on the Apple logo. To my frustration, they both ended up to OLX (now Carousell) buy and sell site as repair parts and I sold them for just P1,000.00.
But this frustration didn’t stop me from buying my 3rd and last Ipod device. Cautiously, i took much care in handling it and even research for some articles on how can i repair it once it gets corrupted or damaged again. And the most helpful article for me was about formatting the Ipod using the Itunes and a latest firmware for my 6th Gen Device. I have tested it for several times in my Ipod and it works great as it improves my device’s performance once I feel something wrong is with my Ipod. You too can perform this method for the following reasons:
Why Do You Need To Format Your Ipod
- Ipod can no longer be detected by your Itunes or PC
- Ipod is stuck up on Apple Logo
- You just want to refresh the memory allocation of your Disk for musics.
- Ipod is not playing some musics.
- Ipod’s Hard Disk is corrupted
This method can or may only repair the software issue of your device and not the hardware side like broken LCD, wheel mouse or buttons and mechanical defect of hard disk itself. So when you feel like throwing your Ipod because you think it’s hopeless, just give this method a shot and try to do this once and for all.
Requirements For Formatting Your Ipod
Before we start, below is the list of required tools:
- Laptop/Desktop with latest installed iTunes Software
- Ipod Classic 6th Gen
- Ipod classic cable (30-pin to USB cable)
- Ipod Firmware (iPod_38.2.0.5.ipsw)
How To Format Your Ipod Classic 6th Gen
Here are the steps:
First, put your Ipod into Disk Mode. This is done by pressing and holding both the MENU button and the Center button until the screen changes into apple logo. When the apple logo appears, press and hold the Center button and PLAY/PAUSE button until the screen shows the Disk Mode mode. See Figures below:
Then Plug your Ipod to one of the USB ports of your computer using the 30-pin to USB cable. Upon plugging, your computer should detect your Ipod device and start charging. See Figure below:
On your “My Computer” windows, right-click your Ipod device and select Format… .Select exFAT (Default) under File system then un-check the Quick Format option. Then click Start button. (Ensure that you have selected your Ipod device and NOT your computer disk nor any other disks as it will erase all your data in the device. You don’t wanna mess with your computer right??) Then click OK button to continue the format.
This formatting process will take more time to finish so ensure that your laptop is charged as well as your patience (approximately an hour of waiting). Once done, it will prompt the following display. Just click the OK button to close the window. After formatting, your Ipod device should have maximum capacity of free memory/space.
Next thing to do is to restore your Ipod using iTunes. Run you iTunes app. Upon opening, it should detect your Ipod device just like the figure below. Click OK button to continue.
To start restoring you Ipod, hold the Shift key on your keyboard and click the Restore iPod.. button at the same time. Please refer to figure below:
After clicking the Restore iPod… button, it will prompt an iTunes folder to where you will need to point the location of the firmware (iPod_38.2.0.5.ipsw) to be downloaded to your device. Once located, click the Open button. See figure below:
After clicking the Open button, iPod restoration will start. Your device will restart after the restoration has successfully completed and iTunes should detect your newly formatted iPod.
Then Voila! You can now start configuring you new iPod and sync your playlists with it!
